Curriculum
-
Intentional
curriculum for the development of the whole child
includes a print rich environment, music, creative
movement, cooking, art experiences, story telling
and gross motor activities utilizing developmentally
appropriate teaching methods.
-
Based
on the knowledge that pre-school age children learn
through sensory motor experiences. The classroom
environment is intentionally shaped for the child
to learn through hands-on experiences.
-
Structured
play is an essential component of a quality early
childhood program. Play is the work of childhood
and children enjoy play. Play nurtures children's
development in all areas: intellectual, social emotional,
physical and spiritual.
Child With
God
-
St. John's Episcopal Day School is a ministry and
community outreach of St. John's Episcopal Church.
-
Children
at St. John's attend a children's chapel service
each week in the sanctuary of St. John's Episcopal
Church. The Rector of St. John's leads the service.
The service includes children's hymns, the Lord's
prayer and a children's sermon.
-
The
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, an age appropriate
religious curriculum, teaches children that "God
is love" and develops an awareness that he/she
is loved unconditionally by God. The Montessori
method allows children the individual freedom to
choose and order necessary to create an environment
within which each child comes to God "all by
myself".
Child
with Adult
-
Warm
loving relationships with staff members create attachment
bonds from which children have the self-confidence
and self-esteem to develop to their fullest potential.
-
Staff
members model behaviors and create classroom discipline
that teaches children kind actions toward others.
-
Staff
and parent involvement including parent/teacher/director
conferences are aimed toward the development of
consistent adult images that build trust between
children and adults. "partners in Excellence"
is the school's motto'; parents are seen as a vital
part of the partnership.
-
Each
child is seen as an individual though part of a
larger group. Professional developoment of staff
members is reflected in the high quality of individual
attention given to each child.
Child with
Child
- Through relationships
with other children, children learn cooperation and
respect for one another.
- Through play
with others, children develop problem solving skills
and language.
- Children at
St. John's build relationships with classmates that
last a lifetime.
